Chamber Orchestra of Europe | Bernard Haitink conductor | Gautier Capuçon violoncello
Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Symphony No. 1 in B flat major, Op. 38 Spring Symphony
Concerto for violoncello and orchestra in A minor, Op. 129
Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120
Ever since his debut in Lucerne in 1966, when he led the Swiss Festival Orchestra, the Dutch maestro Bernard Haitink has been making Festival history. He has conducted the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra here. Especially in recent years Haitink has caused quite a stir with his large-scale cycles of music by Beethoven and Brahms, each of them featuring the artistry of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. This felicitous pairing now resumes as Haitink takes up his latest project: three concerts spread across the Easter and Summer Festivals for 2014, during the course of which he will traverse all four symphonies as well as the three instrumental concertos by Robert Schumann. In the process, Haitink will no doubt debunk a number of familiar prejudices – like the one that asserts that this composer was a lackluster orchestrator, that his orchestral writing is too thick and opaque. Just listen to Haitink – and be astounded as he makes you rethink that and other canards!
